Auditioning to be an SYC Ensemble Singer
Auditions are open year-round, and based on the needs of the choir.
The SYC Ensemble Singer should ideally possess:
• a voice of good quality, and flexible enough for ensemble work
• choral experience
• the ability to sight read
• a tuned ear
• the ability to handle different languages
• an openness to perform all types of choral music
• an openness to feedback and constructive criticism
Audition Procedure
1. Potential members are encouraged to observe a choir rehearsal prior to their actual audition.
2. The actual audition consists of:-
• a 2-minute solo of your choosing (no pop songs, Western or Asian)
• vocal exercises to determine range
• sight singing short excerpt of music
The Conductor, in addition to members of the Executive Committee, will be in attendance at your audition.
Upon successful completion of your audition, you will be accepted as an SYC Ensemble Singer for a probationary period of three months. A second audition will be arranged upon completion of your probationary period.
Rehearsals and Performances
We rehearse every Wednesday (7:30pm to 10:30pm) and Saturday (2:30pm – 6:30pm) at the YMS Arts Centre, 54 Waterloo Street.
The SYC Ensemble Singers present two concerts in a calendar year:- a chamber recital usually in March and an annual concert usually in August. In addition to our own concerts, the choir is often asked to perform for civic and private functions, or collaborate with music ensembles. The SYC Ensemble Singers also embark on international tours, at least once a year.
Singers are required to participate in any given production so that the SYC Ensemble Singers is well represented and the choir’s distinctive sound is not compromised. As such, singers are encouraged to plan ahead and commit to each project.
Singers missing more than one-third of rehearsals for any given production may be auditioned, at the discretion of the Conductor.
Financial Commitment
The SYC Ensemble Singers is an amateur choir, and no singer is paid for their participation. The annual membership fee is $100 per singer which helps to defray operating costs. In addition, singers are required to place a $100 score deposit, refundable upon the member leaving the choir.
Uniform
The SYC Ensemble Singers perform in either:-
1. Formal (‘#1’) – for women, an all-black pant-suit; for men, an all-black jacket and light green shirt.
2. Semi-formal (‘#2’) – for women, a light green dress; for men, a shirt-pants combo.
The cost of both sets of uniform is borne by the member.
